Songs Arriving

“What is That?” It is significant to me that today there are singer, songwriter, musicians in the biggest bands in the world, who speak regularly in their interviews of ‘songs just arriving; coming from somewhere, falling from the sky.’ Their best songs ‘flow through them,’ they understand their creative responsibility it to get out of the way and allow the songs to write themselves through them.

Often they get a whole song very quickly, or bits and pieces over time. Then crafted and produced in collaboration with band members, and others they respect in their relationship and creative chemistry. It is not a cold ‘4 steps songwriting formula,’ but something they recognise as a gift within, something other worldly; from God, the universe, a supernatural experience they tap into regularly, as their internal creative river is constantly quickened in their daily work .

Chris Martin of the band Coldplay, Bono of U2, and Noel Gallagher of Oasis / High Flying Birds, among many other artists, all attribute their best work to the phenomena of songs arriving. The question is; “What is that? And where do they come from?”

The following is an extract from my book Prophet Musician - ‘As I Have Called You’ (Chapter 15 ‘The Singers’, page 286. Book link on endtimewriters.com).

In the world, there are key songsmiths and composers who understand ‘writing in a flow’ they are aware of songs and arrangements coming from somewhere else, just arriving or falling from above somewhere. God is not always acknowledged as the source, but the music gift and principle of receiving the music is exactly the same. It’s actually a spiritual flow, where you follow, listen, tap into it and create songs and sounds.

Paul McCartney composed the melody of the song “Yesterday” in a dream. It was finished in 1965, after months of crafting, but so un-Beatles in the band’s early days. It made the world sit up and listen, and became the most recorded song in the modern music culture of our times. What is that?

In late 1990, the band U2 were in Hansa Studios, Berlin Germany, to record their album Achtung Baby. The band’s relationship was tenuous. Guitarist, the Edge, played a chord progression and a spiritual moment of presence happened. The lead singer Bono, sang lyrics that just arrived, and the song “One” was born. It went on and touched the world, and is one of U2’s best and most recorded songs. What is that? U2 received a Grammy in 2002, for the album All That You Can’t Leave Behind. In the acceptance speech Bono said, “God has walked through the room on our record.” What is that?

Many other famous musicians, have experienced songs, melodies and sounds, just arriving. The song ideas just blow in from above, or come through them. They listen and write the music, knowing it is from a place beyond themselves, and for some it has been a strong spiritual experience which they revere and respect. Where from?

In 1993, Hillsong worship leader Darlene Zschech, was in a room at home with her young children, playing her old piano. In a financially stressful time of life and raising a family, she chose to worship from the Bible lyrics of Psalm 96. “Shout to the Lord” permeated the air; she writes the song, but was not sure if it was any good. It became one of the most recorded Christian songs in history. What is that?

Mozart downloaded whole pieces of music from above. In hearing the sounds and arrangements in his head, he often wrote the compositions unedited. What is that? German Church music director Johann Sebastian Bach of the late Baroque period (late 1600s - mid-1700s), wrote music pieces that were centuries ahead of time and he was chastised by his church. Why is that? Handel wrote his oratorio Messiah in just 24 days in 1741. It is said he was deeply inspired by God, and in writing the “Hallelujah” chorus, he saw all of heaven before him. What is that?

In the Bible Old Testament, 3000 years ago, Jehoshaphat’s musicians fasted and prayed through the night in obedience to a prophetic decree. The wind blew in the desert and one line from a song was given to them to sing. “Praise the Lord, for His mercy endures forever.” 2 Chronicles 20:21b. Israel won a major war with musicians singing one lyric line of praise in front of the advancing army. Why is that?

There are sounds, ideas and melodies, that have great power. They come from somewhere, captivating the hearts of millions of people and changing atmospheres - something is at work in the entire world, now more than ever in history. In the last days before Jesus returns to earth, God said, ‘I will pour out My Spirit on ALL flesh;’ Joel 2:28a. What does that mean?

In this post-pandemic time, 2021 onward, God is extending His hand of love to all humanity. His Holy Spirit wind will blow more and more through anybody anywhere, and the melodies from heaven, in all their forms, structures, visions and creativity, will speak to men and women if they are listening. This truth applies to writers, poets, artists, designers, filmmakers, dancers, in fact anything on a creative level. ‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says…” Revelation 2:29.

Christians are to speak to one another in ‘spiritual songs’ (‘speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,’ Ephesians 5:19). What is that? It is the sounds of heaven, coming from God to earth, by the flow of His Spirit; for the ultimate purposes of God and the betterment of humanity; rooted in God’s love.

Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.’ 1 Corinthians 2:12. This includes music and all creativity and art. Are you listening and freely receiving?

In this time many will rise up and fulfil this calling through their gifts and talents. This prophetic nature of music and creativity will speak more and more supernaturally into this world, bringing great change, and ultimately, millions of people will turn to God, knowing the real truth and understanding of who He is and why Jesus Christ is the key to everything for the human race. The day is drawing near…

‘And all the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before You.’ Psalm 22:27.
